This Saturday the 21st from 10-3pm i`m going to open up the studio for a fabric sale . I`ve got lots of stash bags full of Wendy dress fabrics, lots of remnant pieces , and a few bolts of Kaffe, Amy and others by the metre all cheaper than retail, most fabrics are 100% cotton quilting weight. I`ll also have a few other bits and bobs along with a sale rack from the Olive Grove.

The Polly Pratt studio is down the allyway beside the Olive Grove 159 Sydney Rd Brunswick . Sorry but it`s cash only.

I`m a day behind , i`m sure i will double up on days soon. Today is what i`m having for breakfast. Some kinda muesli and cheesecake yoghurt.Simple but yum and i`m even making my lunch to take to the studio, i`m hoping i`ll make that one into a good habit .

I`m joining in on www.fatmumslim.blogspot.com first month of 2012 photo`s of one`s self and life. As my camera battery is dead and i have just got back from the gym and look yuck!! i will post a photo taken at a bar a few weeks ago to get me going.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years Eve. I had a quite family Christmas back in Auckland . New Years Eve i was so tired i went to bed at 9.30 , but it was great to get up in the morning without a sore head.

I`ve got lots of new things planned for this year , i`ll be starting tomorrow by cutting out some new knit skirts , easy tops and washing some denim for more Aussie shift dresses, photo`s to come .

On my last trip home with Brendan we stayed at Mum and Dad`s new place just out of Napier. While there i met Natasha who has The Flower Barrow in Taradale, the most stunning florist. She also stocks cute crafty pieces from local crafts people, I`m not exactly local but i`m lucky to now be stocked by her.You can now get Wendy dresses, cute little girl and bunny brooches ,coin purses and the like, when you go in to get your fresh flowers for the week.

Home in Auckland is no longer home, as mum and dad packed up and moved to Napier. More about that another time. So this time i stayed with my brother at his flat/studio/gallery in the city. I was only staying for four days to see his new exhibition in Parnell, only the volcano in Chilli had other ideas. I ended up staying 9 days and going to Napier with mum and dad for a few days. I would have to say it was great having a forced break, but bloody freezing in Napier when you only took enough clothes for a few days. The photo`s are a few of Richards exhibition pieces.

This Saturday launches the first of the Northcote Town Hall Winter Artisan markets. I will be there with a small group of Olive Grove makers- Ena Designs, MiM and Starashan .

I will have $10 fabric stash bags from my dresses along with the dresses . I will also have a sale rack with prices starting at $35 this will include jackets, merino hoodies, t-shirts and a few dresses.

Next week i`ll be taking a break back in Auckland to go to the opening of my brother `s art exhibition, i`ll take lots of photo`s .

You will have to excuse the bad photo`s, but i just wanted to show you the 1st sample of the new wendy dress with sleeves which will be three quarter, and a scoop neckline.
The main problem is the sleeve so i`ll be off to see the pattern drafter in the next week or two for another go. I can see it dressed up with a belt , beautiful bag and a killer pair of shoes. I`m off to check out shoe shops online.

Do you ever set targets for your business? I do

July last year i decided i wanted to make and sell 200 dresses.

BONKERS RIGHT?

Not really, 180 and counting and hoping to make the last 20 by July the 1st.

The only thing is that this July i want to set a new target of 350 and still be making them myself.

BONKERS AGAIN!!!

Being at Sew it Together really made me realise that i only really want to make dresses out of beautiful fabrics, and take it from a hobby wage to a full time wage, which will be the hard part.

The last few weeks i`ve been working through, how i`m going to make this happen.

One of the ways is focusing on a few core styles which i`ll introduce you to over the coming weeks , some of them you will have already seen and some may have had the odd tweak to them like the Wendy dress with a three quarter sleeve.

I`m going to go and set some more realistic targets now like doing the dishes every night for the rest of the year.

THAT REALLY WOULD MAKE ME BONKERS!!

I`m finally feeling like i`m getting somewhere.
I feel like i have been sewing non stop for the last few days.

31 wendy dresses close to finishing are now hanging on the rack .
I have another 28 that i would like to get to this stage before tomorrow morning so i can spend Sunday putting in zips and binding.

I THINK I NEED TO GET OUT MORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! And not just to Spotlight where i`m heading soon.

You might just have been wondering where i have been the last few months.

I`ve been hiding with a pair of scissors in my hand or behind the sewing machine.
If it doesn`t rain it pours!!! As soon as i had taken the department store job i got into incube8r Fitzroy along with the Sydney store a few weeks earlier , with the Olive Grove and Christmas on it`s way the work more than tripled. All the dresses i had been making for this time of year had basically sold so it was back to the sewing machine after cutting. The pictures are of a few dresses i`ve cut,this week i`m aiming on making about 40 plus dresses and tops to start distributing through the three stores . I think there is about 80 dresses and 20 odd tops ,a few skirts and 20 plus singlets all to be finished by the end of next week , MAD i know but i can only try.
I`m going to post daily up dates and photo`s, hopefully it will keep me on target At the moment i have piles of half made dresses and tops on the floor awaiting zips and overlocking.

It`s been awhile since i`ve been here, i finally got my new computer so hopefully this will be a more frequent thing. Last week i started my new part time job in a department store in Bourke St. Today i`ve got a full day off so i headed off down to the much neglected studio to spend the day doing some serious sewing , only to have everything i touched turn to crap LOL just not meant to be today, so i`m back at home about to start the housework.(much neglected).

Not only has it been raining outside,it`s been raining inside over here at Polly Pratt head quarters today with Wendy dresses. I`ve locked myself in today to try and start stocking up on dresses for summer in the shop and a few markets i`ve booked over Xmas . The photo isn`t very good but i`ve got about 13 hanging up to be hemed ,binding sewn on or zips put in., that will be tomorrows job. The fabrics are all Kaffe and i`ve no idea of the names. These should be in the shop in time for the weekend.

Ok , it`s a day late due to three out of three computers in the house not working .

I finally had my first delivery of House Doctor for the online store opening August. The store will be starting with fabric and bits and pieces such as the sewing tins and twine. I`ll then be loading Wendy and Shift dresses once i have new labels made with, made in Australia not New Zealand (i never saw that one coming a few years ago) .

Cleaning out

So i decided it was time to clean ,out my thread bag it had been some time.When i had the shop they lived in plastic draws but when i closed and was packing up, i just threw them into a green recycle bag and thats where they stayed. I always intended to move them but mum just posted them over in the bag and its taken about one and a half years to finally move them (can`t belive i`ve been here that long) they are now living in a picnic basket i got at savers , my only purchase there( i`m not very tinnie when it comes to op shops), less a few dirty old reels and a few that had pretty much run out . I`m sure it`s only a matter of time before it`s full of knots .

I have finally got around to making my pleated skirt up for the shop , i`ve made them up in size 10-18 . I made them out of the Kaffe furnishing fabric as it`s a slightly more heavy weight for winter.

Well i`m finally back, I`m not quite sure where to start since it`s been so long and so much has been going on.

New studio

I`m pretty exccited as tonight, i started moving into a studio at the back of the Olive grove.This will mean that the kitchen table will now be just that and the spare room might once again be a bedroom, actually i think the whole appartment might once again be tidy and not a messy sewing room.This all happened pretty quickly but if i want to get ahead with Polly Pratt i think it will work well. I also have a big cartel online store coming , once i replace my laptop which died , hopefully i`ll be getting a new one first thing in March . Blogging might be pretty sparse untill then, but i`ll take lots of photo`s for when it`s up and running.

The other exciting news is that i got some new patterns made this week, a new dress for size 16-20 i`ll be sampling this up in the next week and jeans size 10-20 samples will also be done for these soon.I`ll show you photo`s as soon as i can.

Saturday i`ll be at the Sisters market in Brunswick with mainly mini Polly Pratt and a few womens dresses that i have.

Wow , today was far too hot. I was in the Olive grove today i had planned on getting lots of cutting out done but it was just too hard. I did however manage to get a few skirts cut ,out of this heavy linen that i got when i went back home. I also finished the suger free fortune cookies. I left a little early today as it had been quite due to the weather .It was straight home to vege!!

I `m finally back to blogging again, only the camera isn`t, one more week till it will be all sorted ,then there will be a new giveaway YAY.

These photo`s are of my going away party way back in Febuary i found them just before and thought i`d show you the great cupcakes mum had made ,very Aussie i also got the teddy bear in the Aussie cricket uniform and a small Collingwood footy ball LOL Brendan is a huge sports freak.

I moved it like Mike today on the bike around Brunswick then up to GJ fabrics for a quick look , think i will have to go back when i get paid from the new job that i start tomorrow.

I`ll be selling shoes 4 days a week from now on and sewing for the Olive Grove the rest of the time. I dropped down some new baby singlets appliqued with Babushka dolls, and calico bags which i also appliqued today, i think i will have these as a standard from now on.Embroidered tea towels are also on the list.

I`ll post some photo`s when the camera is al sorted.

I`m finally healthy again from the dreaded throat infection, and today i started my new part time job in a shoe shop. I`ve got the next week off as mum is arriving for a week on Thursday so i`ll be taking her site seeing, to all the crafty places and markets i can think of, any ideas please let me know. I`ve come up with a few so far , i`ll post about them later.

It`s great that i`ll be working 3 days a week to start with then possibly full time as it will give me lots of time to sew for the Olive Grove and i have lots of new ideas. I have some odd sizes left in my skirts so i`ll be putting them on sale for $50 as of tomorrow .

I`ll be able to get my camera fixed this week then i can take some photo`s of the great things i got at the Sonny and Coco market in the weekend and my new boots, theres got to be something good about working in retail!!

Polly chilling out in the window

My camera wont charge, i think it might be the new charger i brought to re-place the old one so i will get some tape tomorrow to try a few things out if this fails it definatly the camera.

The dresses are now in there new home at the Olive Grove and there are bags and cards all of the floor from all the goccoing.

Since i cant show you all what i`ve been working on i`ll tell you a bit about the Olive Grove. I have taken this straight from a little flyer we have in the shop, mainly so i dont get anything wrong.

It`s Tuesday and i cant wait to finish the dresses i`m working on ,so i can play with the gocco.

Finally off the couch

I finally made it off the couch on Friday morning when i moved it like Mike with mim down the Merri creek to Ceres for a Olive grove meeting. FREEZING COLD!!

Once back home i spent the day sewing dresses and while the footy was on later that night i made a pencil case, i`m going to make a few coin purses for the Sonny and coco market next month but i`ve still got a bit of practise left untill i put them out there.

Saturday i had to miss the Sisters market as i was down the road working in the Olive grove, which was a bit of a bummer. It`s always such a great market .

Today i had a quick look at the design market at Fed square but forgot to take the camera. I ended the day at Riverland ,Brendan and my favourite bar with a bottle of bubbles and cheese platter, i could have stayed all afternoon.Now back home i`m about to get back on the sewing machine as there are more dresses to make.

I`ve finished stitching the first cushion , i`ve used all different stitches to create a totally random look. I`ve also started another but i`ve run out of fusing to make more along with the belts. The only thing is that the scraps are used up and i`m now cutting randomly into my fabrics ,but i`m liking the result so thats all good.

The next step will be sewing them up with a denim backing.

I wont be moving it like Mike today as i`ve come down with a bad sore throat ,proberly because i had one last week and getting caught in the rain yesterday brought it back. I guess

it`s a good excuse to stay home and sew.

The start of something new!!

I`ve spent the last hour plus cutting,laying and fusing this cushion cover, i cant wait to stitch into it and see how it turns out. I got the idea from the belts, it all started when i found i had lots of little bits of fabric which were to small for anything and then i thought if i appliqued them onto the belts i could use them up that way. The belts have been a hit at the markets so i`ve started thinking what else i could do,i came up with cushions and i`m working on a few more things.

Even though it`s freezing out there i wrapped up and took off on the townie to the Yarn Barn in Coburg i had brought wool from them at Camberwell market but had never been to the store .Half way there the rain started thankfully it wasn`t too heavy .The colours were total eye candy and the choice was a bit confusing, i`m knitting a blanket of squares since i cant get the knack of chrochet . I thought these three would work in with the other colours i have left over from scarfs and hats.

The tags i got from a dusty newsagent on the way in Coburg, i think they had been in there for years, i`m going to try my gocco screens out on them and make gift tags.

I`m already wondering where i`ll end up tomorrow while moving it like Mike.

It`s Tuesday and i can`t wait to go and move it like Mike I`ll be going for a bike ride and i`m not sure where i`ll go , think i `ll try a new route today.I also cant wait to start working on my new cushions and playing with the gocco. I`ll report back later with what i found on my ride.

Wow i`m so excited, when i got my gocco back in Auckland the screens it came with were no good .Finally i got some new ones yesterday and i`ve just tried it out. I`M IN LOVE with this little machine . These are my first few practise prints. I`ll have a good play tomorrow.

Daylesford Makers Market

First thing Saturday morning Brendan and i loaded the car up and headed off to Daylesford for the makers market When we got there we stopped into a little cafe for breakfast, the lady must have just opened as we were the only ones in there and it was freezing not even the hot chocolate was going to warm it up. I just hope she turned the heating on as the day just got colder.

When we got to the hall it was buzzing with people setting up for the day, it was such a lovely town hall i forgot to take photo`s, but i `ll get some next time.

My stall was next to Alison who is just as lovely as her Lark products. I also met Steph from The Doily whose blog i follow, she makes the sweetest clocks from old china plates.

The market started at 10 and the people just poured in, it was busy all day . Cam from Curlypops and tinniegirl stopped by to say hello ,Cam was wearing one of her flower brooches which looked fantastic.

The new belts and booties were the biggest hit of the day . I`m now working on some new products for the sonny and coco market on the 5th of July.

I can`t wait for the next one.

I`ve signed up over at Meet me at Mikes to move it like mike. This means that i`ll be getting out everyday for some much needed exercise.I`ll be riding my Townie down the Upfield track from Coburg to Brunswick across Sydney Rd into Lygon St, up into Nicholson st back into Coburg.I had been doing this the last few weeks but spent most of last week on the couch with a cold, so i`ll be getting back into it tomorrow and i`m going to document my bike ride here,with photo`s of what i find on the way.

I spent today in the Olive Grove surrounded by crafty goodness . While i was there i was able to spend some time finishing some booties for the market on Saturday, i`ve still got a few more to finish and i`m playing around with some in denim with a felt sole, i think they will look great once they start to fray.

I think i will focus more on accessories for this market than clothing however i will have a little bit of clothing, some winter hoodies, halter tops that can be worn winter or summer ( there is a couple of tricks to these top/dresses) skirts and if i can get some wendy dresses finished in time, i`ll also have some mini Polly Pratt dresses for the little ladies.

Giveaway prize, Good luck

It`s Tuesday and i cant wait,till Saturday when we are going to Daylesford , where Polly Pratt will be having a Stall at the Makers Market. I `m yet to go to Daylesford,but i`m told it`s beautiful. Will post more about the market later.

It`s now been a month since i started at the Olive grove, which is ticking along really well.

These are the booties so far.I got the pattern from an old doll making book when i was back in NZ it was quite heavy so i left it at Mum and Dads. I just made the size bigger to fit a toddler.

After a few early mornings and late nights sewing , i had done as much as i could for the market.

The day went pretty fast with a steady stream of people and more than enought sales to make the day worth while.

I`ve put the left overs into the Olive Grove and will be adding more tomorrow when i`m working in there for the day which will be fun.

Yesterday i took in the Polly Pratt dolls , i only have 3 but will be making more in the next couple of weeks. I`m working on little felt shoes for the little ones this week and some new belts, i tested a couple at the maket and they went really well , hopefully i can get some into the shop for the weekend.

It`s Thursday evening and i`m now FREAKING out as i found out yesterday that i`ll be having a stall at the Sonny and Coco Market in Preston , Sunday morning 10-4.

I`ve been madly sewing since yesterday, i decided i`m only going to use fabric from my stash , so i`ve been finishing embroidering white linen for button hair ties that i started months ago, wool felt hair clips with felt i brought from the stitches and craft show, mini Polly Pratt dresses out of fabric that had been sitting there all year. Halter tops and dresses that had been cut since my old shop in Auckland, more belts out of little scraps. I think the stall will look a bit bitsy but at least i`m using up the stash to make room for more.

The other day i had my first day working in The Olive Grove, within an hour of putting one of my halter dress`s out on the manniquin it had sold which was great, the funny thing was she lived in Auckland and had tried a green one on in my old shop a couple of years ago, such a small world.

After getting home this morning from an early start in Auckland and a horrid two hour time difference i had a little sleep then out came the sewing machine where i started to sew up some skirts that i cut out back in Auckland. I spent Monday cutting out skirts,hoodies, dresses and some tops to bring back to make up.

Tuesday we drove about seven hours down to Norswood in the Hawkes bay. I don`t drive so instead i got out the knitting needles and pretty much didn`t stop knitting untill we got there,lets just say my arm is still suffering.

Wednesday we went to a few vineyards and took in the sites of Hastings and Napier.

When we got back on Thursday i had the big job of packing and i wanted to bring lots back with me including heavy patterns on card. Thankfully Brendan is a Quantas member and gets a bit more baggage allowance.

This weekend i`m going to spend making up everything i brought back with me for the Olive Grove.

I`m not sure whats happened with the spacing of this post but i`m far to tired to play around with it.Bed is calling.

The past few days and nights i`ve been madly sewing mini Polly Pratt dresses, i hadn`t made these for awhile but i thought they would be great for the Olive Grove. I took them down this afternoon as we leave tomorrow for a weeks holiday .My favourite one is the one made in the Dick and Jane, tape measure fabric . Tonight i`ve started on making the yo yo hair clips to go with them , i `ll be taking them into the shop next Saturday when i get back and have made a few more. I`ve also started another scarf in blues, i just forgot to take a photo, i`m going to finish it while Brendan drives us to Norsewood a good days drive from Auckland.

This weekend started of with a night at the footy on Friday with Collingwood wining, making Brendan very happy for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday morning we rushed through the Made in Thornbury market, catching up with constant kaos and buying a lovely bag for a birthday present for Brendan`s sister from curlypops which she loved.

While Brendan was at the football club i went to the Olive Grove to get my key and have another look around. I `ve been finishing some dresses, the zips aren`t great but if i un-pick them again they will just look worse so the first few will look a bit crap but i`ve got the knack now.It`s just been a lack of practise and having been spoiled by having a machinist for a few years.

Sunday morning we went out to the Camberwell market to stock up on wool for scarves that i`m knitting for the Olive Grove. The striped one is about half way finished i`m hoping to finish it tonight while watching Underbelly. I`ll be taking lot`s of the wool back to NZ with me so i can knit while Brendan is driving us to the Hawkes bay where we will be staying for a few days.

I never got to put any photo`s up on Saturday as i got into knitting the brooches and couldn`t stop untill i had finished.

This week i found out that i will be joining the crafty crew at The Olive Grove on Sydney Rd Brunswick. There is no website at the moment so i will take some photo`s on Saturday.

Next Friday we are heading back to New Zealand for a weeks holiday where i`ll be able to get more of my patterns to make up some fresh designs for The Olive Grove.

The camera is all fixed now, it was the charger. Now that that`s done i can take some photo`s of things that i`ve been working on. I`ve got the place to myself the whole day tomorrow so i`ll be doing lots of CLEANING, sewing and taking photo`s.

These photo`s were taken when i opened my second shop in Ponsonby, i hadn`t looked at them for awhile and i`m starting to miss the screen and furniture ,all the furniture i had in the shop i had brought so i could put them into a house. I just didn`t plan on moving to Melbourne. I think i`ll have to start saving to get a container sent.

You just never know what`s around the corner!!

I`m so excited, i won an auction on trade me (NZ version of Ebay) for a gocco screen printer this morning. The only thing is that i will have to wait till i go back to Auckland to get my hands on it .I`m having it sent to my mum and dad`s, this may take awhile since i was only there a few weeks ago but it will give me lots of time to come up with some great ideas for using it.

I spent today cutting out fabrics i brought yesterday for wendy dresses and belts.My camara is still not working so i cant put up any photo`s of them. These photo`s were taken at Fashion exposed last year in Melbourne i just found them today i was meant to put them up last year but 2 days after i got back i crashed out with glandular fever and it was the last thing i felt like doing, better late than never.

I brought these fabrics from Amitie for a quilt, only i started to cut it a bit wonky so my quilt is now being made out of yo yo `s i`ve made about 400 so far and have about 600 more to go as i`m being greedy and want a king size.I`m heading back to Amitie tomorrow to buy more fabric for Dresses and i `ll be using the left overs for more yo yo`s.

Shift dress

This week, i`ve pretty much spent the last five days on the couch watching crap on tv with a head cold.

I`m finally feeling back to normal and feel like getting some sewing done.

The good news is that next month i`ll be teaching some dressmaking classes over at Amitie I`ve put the times and date somewhere so will post these at a later date .The three styles i`ll be teaching are the Polly Pratt wendy dress, Polly Pratt shift dress and the Polly Pratt ribbon cami.

The ribbon cami is for a beginner and the other two dresses for the more advanced, but if i can make them most people will be able to.I`ve never done this before so to get lots of practice in i`ll be making one of every size for people to try on for size before the lesson .The wendy dress and ribbon cami`s are in a size 8-20 and the shift dress size 8-16.

The photo`s aren`t that great , my camara has broken so these will have to make do till i get it fixed.

Well i`ve been here for a couple of weeks now and we still dont have proper internet, so thats why posts have been non exsistant.

So far i`ve just been hanging out ,Last week i went to the first Melbourne meet for the Brown owls at Dante`s in Gertrude St, Which was great.

I`ll be going back to Auckland in about a weeks time to get an order made up for a store in Wellington and Auckland so i`ll let you know when it`s all in store what and where it is, i just cant say yet.

My overlocker should be getting here today so i`ll be starting to sewing up Wendy dress`s in printed cotton today for an online store ,i`ll be setting this up when i get back from Auckland and have made up a few more things.

The photo is of the wendy dress ,only it`s in silk i`ll be making them in printed cottons and they wont be lined but they still look great.

I`m having a night at home while waiting for Brendan to get here from Melbourne.
While i wait up, i`m going to play around with the gadgets so it might take awhile for me to get things right , like the slide show. I `m not on my computer so i will have to load photo`s tomorrow.

I`m back from Melbourne for a couple of weeks to finsh packing up the flat and everything that came out of the shop. I will be putting the last few pieces on trade me this week.

Once back in Melbourne i will be setting up a Polly Pratt esty shop ,and if your lucky enough to live or holiday in Melbourne i will be taking some sewing classes , using some of the most popular Polly Pratt style`s such as the classic shift dress, party dress with bow, ribbon cami, pijama drawstring pants and 6mth-4 year old girls pop over dress. The location and times are yet to be confirmed but i would love to hear your feed back on any other styles or types of accessories you would like to learn to make.

I have also started up a polly pratt facebook page, i`m yet to workout how to link it from here but if you search polly pratt clothing on facebook you will find it. I`ll work on the link tonight.

I finally have a closing date , which will be the 20th December just in time for Christmas. I `ll be spending 3 weeks in Melbourne with Brendan then back again to pack up the final bits and pieces. Then i`m off again on the 8th of Febuary, only this time with a one way ticket!!!

The good thing is that i still have some great buys in the shop . I will also be adding some new silk party dresses in time for Christmas they were $399 now $160.

Ponsonby will be holding a Christmas party on saturday 6th December

I will have some tables and racks out the front with lots of Christmas bargins.

Moving to Melbourne

It`s official, i`m closing the Polly Pratt store in Ponsonby and moving to Melbourne.
I will still have the shop open for the next month or two with some great bargins, everything has to go as i cant take it with me.
however i will be wholesaling to other stores, if anyone is interested please contact me at the shop or here.
I`m taking a bit of time off at the moment due to glandular fever, so not fun!!
Over the next few months i`ll be looking at doing something of an on-line store so you can still get your favourite things.
